The short version

An AGV pallet truck makes sense when you move 200 or more pallets per shift on fixed routes, run two or three shifts, and struggle to keep operators on the same task. Below that volume, a manual or electric pallet truck usually costs less to own.

Three numbers to check first

Pallets per shift. Count the actual pallet movements on your busiest shift. Under 100, manual handling is fine. Between 100 and 200, an electric pallet truck with a rider platform is usually the cheaper answer. Above 200 on repeatable routes, an AGV starts to pay back.

Shifts per day. A single-shift operation rarely justifies an AGV because the machine sits idle two-thirds of the day. Two or three shifts change the maths quickly.

Route length and repeatability. AGV navigation works best when the same path is travelled many times — receiving to storage, storage to production, production to dispatch. If every trip is different, the mapping and re-routing effort grows.

What the AGV does not solve

An AGV will not fix a badly organised warehouse. If pallets are mixed sizes, aisles are blocked by stock, or the floor has joints and potholes, the vehicle will stop frequently and need operator intervention. Fix the layout first, then automate.

It also does not remove the need for a person. Someone still has to load and unload, clear faults, and manage the dispatch system.

The comparison that matters

Compare total cost over five years, not purchase price. A manual pallet truck costs roughly 3,000 to 6,000 RMB and lasts a decade with basic maintenance. An AGV pallet truck costs 60,000 to 150,000 RMB depending on navigation type and load, plus mapping, integration and annual maintenance. The saving comes from operator hours — one AGV running two shifts can replace roughly 1.5 to 2 operator positions.

Ask before you order

Request a site survey, not a quotation. A supplier who quotes without measuring your aisles, floor flatness and pallet condition is guessing. Our own process starts with the route map and the pallet type, then moves to navigation choice, then to price.

Key Takeaway

A practical checklist for deciding whether to replace manual pallet truck work with an AGV — based on throughput, shift pattern and floor conditions. WR Forklift manufactures electric pallet trucks, stackers, reach trucks and AGV pallet trucks in Taizhou, Jiangsu Province. Standard configurations dispatch within 24-72 hours; custom fork dimensions, lift heights and navigation types are built to order.
