Cold Store AGV: What Changes at Minus 25 Degrees

Why a standard AGV fails in a freezer
A standard AGV rated for 0 to 40 °C will run in a freezer, but not reliably. Three things break down first: battery capacity, sensor accuracy, and hydraulic response. Each has a specific fix.
Battery: expect 40 to 50 percent less capacity
A lithium iron phosphate pack at minus 25 °C delivers roughly half its rated capacity and cannot be charged at that temperature. Two options: specify a heated battery compartment that keeps the pack above 0 °C, or use a swappable pack that charges in the warm zone. The second is usually cheaper to run because it removes the heater load from the battery.
Lead-acid is less suitable here — capacity drops further and the electrolyte can freeze if the state of charge falls below about 60 percent.
Sensors: condensation is the enemy
Laser scanners and cameras fog when the vehicle moves between the freezer and the dock. Two fixes: fit heated scanner housings, and set the route so the vehicle passes through an airlock rather than an open doorway. If the route must cross an open dock, expect cleaning cycles to be scheduled — not optional.
Hydraulics and structure
Standard hydraulic oil thickens at low temperature, slowing lift and increasing pump load. Cold-store units should use low-temperature hydraulic oil rated to minus 30 °C, and the seals should be specified for the same range. Steel structures are not affected, but lubricants on chains and mast rollers must be rated for the temperature or they will stiffen.
What to specify when ordering
Give the supplier four numbers: minimum ambient temperature, time spent inside the freezer versus outside, door type (airlock or open dock), and required runtime per charge. Without these, a cold-store AGV is just a standard AGV with a higher price.
Key Takeaway
Battery, sensor, hydraulic oil and condensation — the four things that must be specified differently for an AGV in a frozen warehouse. WR Forklift manufactures electric pallet trucks, stackers, reach trucks and AGV pallet trucks in Taizhou, Jiangsu Province. Standard configurations dispatch within 24-72 hours; custom fork dimensions, lift heights and navigation types are built to order.
