Narrow Aisle AGV: What 1.65 Metre Working Width Requires

Where the width comes from

A standard counterbalance forklift needs 3.5 to 4.5 metres of aisle to turn. A reach truck needs 2.4 to 3.0 metres. A three-way or VNA truck can work in 1.65 to 2.0 metres because the fork rotates rather than the vehicle. An AGV in a narrow aisle follows the same logic — the vehicle must not turn, so either the fork or the lift mechanism does the work.

Three vehicle requirements

Fork rotation or lateral shift. In a 1.65 metre aisle there is no room to angle the vehicle, so the load has to be presented sideways. This means either a rotating fork carriage or a mast that traverses laterally.

Rail or wire guidance for the last metre. Laser SLAM navigation is typically accurate to plus or minus 10 millimetres, which is enough for open floor but tight for racking entry at height. Most narrow aisle AGV installations use a floor rail, a magnetic tape, or a reflector array in the racking uprights for final positioning.

Load sensing at height. At 8 to 12 metres, a small misalignment becomes a large error. The vehicle should detect rack beam position, not just floor position.

Floor specification

Narrow aisle AGV systems are sensitive to floor flatness. The usual requirement is plus or minus 5 millimetres over a 3 metre span in the aisle, and no steps greater than 2 millimetres at joints. If your floor does not meet this, grinding and levelling is a project cost that must be included before the vehicle is ordered.

Floor marking matters too. Paint stripes wear and confuse camera-based positioning; in-rack reflectors or a floor rail are more durable.

The integration question

A narrow aisle AGV is rarely a standalone purchase. It connects to the warehouse management system to receive put-away and picking tasks. Ask the supplier which WMS systems they have integrated before, and ask for a reference installation in a similar racking height. This is the most common reason projects stall.

Ask before you order

Measure the narrowest point in your aisle including pallet overhang, not the nominal aisle width. Confirm racking upright protection does not narrow the entry. Check floor flatness with a straight edge before requesting a quote.

Key Takeaway

The vehicle, navigation and floor requirements for running an AGV in a very narrow aisle warehouse. WR Forklift manufactures electric pallet trucks, stackers, reach trucks and AGV pallet trucks in Taizhou, Jiangsu Province. Standard configurations dispatch within 24-72 hours; custom fork dimensions, lift heights and navigation types are built to order.
