Three-Way Forklifts for 1650 mm Aisles: How a Narrow Aisle Forklift Changes Warehouse Capacity

A standard counterbalance truck needs 3.5 m or more between rack faces. This article explains how a three-way forklift works in a 1650 mm aisle, what it does to storage density, and how to choose between the WR CSD16 and CSD20.

1. What a three-way forklift actually does

A three-way forklift carries its forks on a slewing head. The head rotates 180 degrees about a vertical axis, and the forks also side-shift left and right independently of the chassis. The truck travels down the aisle with the fork head facing forward, stops at the pick face, then rotates and side-shifts the forks so they line up with the pallet opening on the left or the right.

Nothing about the chassis turns. The truck stays square in the aisle for every put-away and retrieval on both sides.

That single mechanical fact is the reason the aisle can be so tight. A reach truck, a counterbalance truck, or even a standard electric pallet truck all need room to angle the mast or swing the rear end. A three-way truck does not. The narrow aisle forklift footprint in the aisle is essentially the width of the truck plus the pallet depth.

Minimum clear aisle for the WR three-way series is 1650 mm, measured between the rack uprights, with the pallet sitting on the rack beam rather than on the floor.

2. Three-way forklift compared with a reach truck

The comparison that matters when you are planning a building is aisle width against throughput and truck cost. A reach truck is cheaper per unit and faster on long travel runs. A three-way truck costs more but removes 700 to 1150 mm from every aisle in the warehouse.

Run the numbers on a real building before deciding. Take a 60 m long warehouse wall with 1200 x 1000 mm pallets and double-deep racking on both sides. At 2500 mm aisles you fit roughly one fewer rack row per 15 m of building width than you do at 1650 mm. On a 60 x 40 m footprint that is often one to two extra rack rows, which at 8 m lift height is several hundred additional pallet positions. Same building, same roof, same rent.

In a cold store the argument gets stronger. Construction cost per square metre for a freezer room is many times that of a dry warehouse, and the refrigeration load scales with the volume you have to cool, not just the pallets you store. Adding rack rows inside an existing freezer envelope costs nothing in construction. The premium you pay for a three-way truck over a reach truck is typically recovered within a few years on the value of the positions gained, and after that the extra capacity is free.

3. How to choose

4. Special-material load wheels in cold stores

The three-way series runs on large-diameter load wheels made from a special compound rather than standard polyurethane or nylon. Two things happen in a freezer that standard wheels do not handle well. First, condensation and ice make the floor wet, and a hard wheel on a wet floor loses traction exactly when the truck is carrying a 1600 kg load at 10 m. Second, at -25 degrees C standard wheel compounds stiffen, which raises rolling resistance and reduces grip further.

The larger diameter also spreads the load over more of the floor and rolls over small imperfections, joints, and ice patches instead of catching on them. Combined with the load strength needed at height, this is why freezer operators specify the cold-store configuration rather than a standard truck with a different paint colour.

5. Three-way forklift versus a rotator attachment

These are often confused, and the difference is the axis of rotation.

A rotator does not reduce aisle width. Fitting one to a reach truck does not turn it into a narrow aisle forklift.

6. FAQ

What is the minimum aisle width for a three-way forklift?

1650 mm of clear space between the rack uprights for the WR CSD16 and CSD20, with the pallet stored on the rack beam. If the pallet is floor-stacked, or the racking has protruding column guards, allow more. Always confirm against your actual pallet size and rack drawing.

Can a three-way forklift work in a 2000 mm aisle?

Yes, with margin. A 2000 mm aisle gives the operator more room and slightly faster cycle times, but you give up the density benefit that justifies the truck in the first place. If your racking is already built at 2000 mm, a reach truck may be the cheaper answer.

How much storage density does it add?

It depends on building width. Cutting aisles from 2500 mm to 1650 mm typically gains one to two rack rows across a 40 m wide building, which at 8 m lift height is several hundred extra pallet positions in the same footprint.

Does it replace a reach truck completely?

No. Most warehouses run both. The three-way truck works the dense high-bay block; the reach truck handles loading docks, mixed pallets, and lower racking where speed matters more than aisle width.

Is it fast enough for high throughput?

Per pallet, slower than a reach truck, because of the fork head slew. Practical throughput is roughly 20 to 30 pallets per hour per truck in a dense aisle. It suits operations where storage density matters more than picks per hour.

What certifications does WR hold?
